While the "Irene" Hall was under construction, the question of a suitable instrument arose. At first the purchase of a harmonium had been contemplated and the choir offered to donate one to the parish. However, at the Council Meeting held on 28th April 1898 the Council discussed the "possibility of aquiring an organ like [the one] in the Wesleyan Church in Jeppestown". After the Council members had indicated their approval of this, the treasurer was authorised to order a pipe organ from overseas. Prior to this Mrs. van Niekerk had played a harmonium for services.
The organ, costing £303, had arrived subsequent to the inauguration of the "Irene" Hall and was erected by Sydney Smith. It was inaugurated about six weeks later, on Sunday 22nd October 1898.
Nothing further is known about this organ, or its ultimate fate.
