Irene - (pr. AiReeNee) This name was destined to become synonymous with the parish itself and was chosen in the hope that the country would experience a time of peace after the disasterous Jameson Raid of 29th December 1895 at a parish meeting held a few days before 7th May 1898. Mr. AIW Viseé (also sometime Choirmaster) seems to have been the originator of the name, having worshipped in the "Irene" Hall in Utrecht, Holland, before his emigration to South Africa.1, 2
